Recognised today as one of the great masters of modern architecture, Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was born in Kuortane, Finland.
New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) organized several exhibitions in his honor. Since then his professional, successful career growth started.
Artek is still doing business successfully in Helsinki and Tokyo and is leading a separate platform for furniture restoration. He designed it together with his wife Aino, for the occasion of opening the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki. “It’s not an art to take and copy everything from tradition or past, it’s necessary to take the material and energy from nature and respond with the work of art, bringing your own psychical energy into it. Besides projects for his family, cousins and friends, he was responsible for several public facilities at the time, such as Jyväskylä Workers’ Club (1925), Jyväskylä Defence Corps building (1926) and Seinäjoki Defence Corp building (1924–1929).
Given his prolificacy as an architect, its perhaps ironic that it was the Paimio Chair which helped establish his defining design principle of gesamtkunstwerk. He was influenced by painters Paul Cézanne and Fernand Léger, of whom he was a friend. However it was the design of the chair rather than its functionality that helped propel him to prominence throughout Europe and which made it a modern Finnish staple. The wavy lines of its armrest remind of waviness seen in the Savoy Vase. Rational approach to architecture is best seen in his projects for Paimio Sanatorium which was built from 1929 until 1933, as well as Viipuri City Library from 1927 until 1935. His work can be recognized by a number of elements. His work became more expressive and more conceptual thus. Aalto University set the foundation for experimental education system in a way. On some other instances several vases were put together along their wavy lines, while others were placed with flower bouquets. Alvar Aalto, icon of Finnish architecture, contributed many aspects to modern and postmodern architecture, though his most significant contribution and achievement is most likely his practice of gesamtkunstwerk. “The three art forms of architecture, painting and scupulture are linked to one another in that they are all manifestations of the human spirit based on matter”. There he set up his own architectural firm and shortly after was commissioned to design a number of residential properties. Using this technique his items got original, twisted and sculptural shapes. In 1984, MoMA organized an exhibition dedicated to his furniture design and glass work – Alvar Aalto: Furniture and Glass. Alvar Aalto is a name synonymous with Finnish architecture. Aalto drew, painted and sculpted throughout his life. He used to say that every piece of furniture which is directly in contact with human body simply had to be made of natural material. Alvar and Aino Aalto, together with their patron Maire Gullichsen and art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl, founded the Company with a wish to distribute furniture and promote modern living culture through exhibitions and educative programs. Finnish glass factory Karhula-Littala that produced the Savoy Vase even won the award at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937, within the International glass exhibition. The first one under the name Alvar Aalto: Architecture and Furniture was presented in 1938. During a long and prolific career, Aalto designed buildings for almost all key public institutions, as well as standardised housing and private homes. Alvar Aalto found the inspiration in nature and his own surrounding and he was prone to using natural materials. “As it is placed in such a mesmerizing natural environment, Aalto used this to his advantage and designed with the intention of blurring the lines between being inside or outdoors,” said Megan Sveiven, writer at Arch Daily. In 1927 Aalto won a competition to design the Southwestern Finland Agricultural Cooperative Building in Turku, a large, square, multi-purpose structure much more prosaic in comparison to his later works. First works, in accordance with his traditional education, were classical.
