Why has Ikenna pursued this high-minded train of thought, and why has it left him in the deep end? Shooting in a cramped 4:3 ratio that emphasizes the density of this urban landscape, not to mention the daunting height of its under-occupied skyscrapers, Mariani and cinematographer Leo Bittencourt create a richly evocative tribute to the city that is nonetheless no beautified valentine.
For much of the film, Ikenna (Chukwudi Iwuji, from the series The Split) is glimpsed in photographs and videos. In a dream, Amadi sees the same road, with the boys running in the opposite direction and the same trees now a lush purple. Not that “Shine Your Eyes” removes itself from tough realities. With a compelling visual language, “Shine Your Eyes” sees São Paulo through Amadi’s gaze — meditating on the city’s architectural feats and intimate community moments — and takes care in examining the relationship between the two brothers and their Igbo culture. The search for Ikenna brings Amadi to different parts of São Paulo and he quickly becomes enamored with the sounds and sights of the city (which Mariani, and the cinematographer Leonardo Bittencourt, masterfully capture). How can one ever feel real when living in a foreign place? But at times, the script travels well-worn terrain and leaves too many questions unanswered, which for a film with such considered visuals can feel more imprecise than deliberate.
